Secret panel mantels may be available for an additional $100.00. Please be aware that not all installations can accommodate the required space for a panel. Depending on the mantel style and your measurements, the available room in the compartment may vary. Also be aware that the distance from the front of the mantel to the wall may have to be increased to provide a place for the compartment. This would increase the shelf depth and the outside returns which, in turn, may incur additional material, labor, and shipping cost.
Assuming that your space can accommodate a panel, the panel must be above the facing material and cannot overlap it. Our mantels are designed to overlap the facing material along the inside, but, if the facing material extends upward beyond a small overlap, you may not be able to have a panel on your mantel. Therefore, if the facing material is not yet installed. you may want to limit its height to accommodate additional space for the panel. Always keep in mind, however, that it is imperative that you follow applicable building codes regarding distance from the firebox to the the wood of your mantel. Complying to code is the homeowner's responsiblity. (Local codes may vary. Consult your local fire marshall and your firebox insert for information regarding specific code requirements.)
